Early on he offered up his life
His gaze high, they two started out.
A good man sure needs a good wife. . .

A Poem Written and Read at Dr. Hick’s Funeral
by
Rev. Steve Hicks
—Nephew of Don Hicks—

Early on he offered up his life
His gaze high, they two started out.
A good man sure needs a good wife
For this goal of theirs was all about
Helping others and serving the church

This man built his own house, his home
At the edge of a lake, by a pasture green.
He, his wife and their son—
What a beautiful thing, a working team
Helping others and serving the church

But sometimes in this life one needs to move
And this time the move was west.
Out to the mountains, he and his love
Went to their new house, that seemed best
To help others and serve the church

Now the most amazing view lay beyond the back door
Life was rich and sweet for the two.
A place to settle and soak in the splendor
To draw close to the Master, His will to do
Still helping others and serving the church

But the mountains and all that made life dear
Were left behind when he moved again.
God wanted his servant to be nearer
He had plans, huge plans to begin.
For he had been faithful, helping others and serving the church
Faithful, he had been, helping others and serving the church
